As a (Black) behavioral scientist and psychiatrist, Welsing choose a path that complemented her training because by studying and publishing her findings relative to the mind and behavior of oppressed people worldwide, she has provided a mirror that reflects the devastating effects of racism (white supremacy). She was called "the most influential black woman in journalism today" by American Libraries in 1994. Susan L. Taylor, who at the height of her occupational success, was so moved by the need for providing direction and support for discouraged and endangered inner city youth, left her prosperous post with Essence magazine to be the founder of the National Cares Mentoring Movement.
